I love that Joelle is eating solids now. I didn't do as much research as I would have liked on weaning... I just couldn't get my hands on the recommended books I wanted to read, so I stuck to a nutrition book that lived on my nightstand when I was pregnant.
I absolutely love this book. Clear, concise, realistic and most important, thorough! It has several chapters in the back on starting solids, so I studied it and just followed it's simple guidelines. It includes several studies (one done by Duke University, holla)... the most fascinating one being the effects of food additives on children. Would you believe that additives like colors, preservatives and "the like" contribute to asthma, eczema and hyperactivity? Hey, Joelle, want some bananas with a pinch of the jitters? ha no thanks.
Some books can make you FREAK out. One of my pregnancy books basically told me all the things that could possibly go wrong... like what the pipes in your house puts in your water. Thanks, there's nothing I can do about the pipes, but good to know I'm consuming enough copper to give my unborn child a tail and three eyes.
(not really, but you get the point)
But this nutrition book focuses on what you can do, realistically.
So, this is what I do.
Slice it.
Steam it.
Mash it.
Spoon it.
Pumpkin
Apples and pears
Broccoli
Watermelon
Carrots
She eats a lot of other things like bananas. She has tried but does not like cauliflower or potatoes. I can't blame her on the cauliflower.... but potatoes?! I bet once I start adding some butter and bacon bits she'll come around. hee hee
It seems like a lot of work for a couple spoon fulls, but I can steam one pot of veggies and it lasts a whole week. Fruits are trickier because they spoil so fast... I usually give us both a good wipe-down after bananas.
I can't wait for the day when we get our high chair (soon, I hope!) and she sits at the table and eats pork chops and collard greens and macaroni with us!
