If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our bodies. If they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees. Let no one go there unwarned and unprayed for. ~ Charles Haddon Spurgeon

It's only been on night and morning without Duke, and it has been so difficult. I keep imagining things- like his little hiccups at night, or think I hear him scratching at the door.
It's amazing how much you come to enjoy a dogs companionship... especially now, since we don't have any friends or family near.
Now, the only thing that helps me not be so sad is visiting website after website and researching dogs with good dispositions, and trying to look forward to the day when we can get a new dog. I've almost ruled out getting another dog from this city... they are badly mistreated as a puppy here, and I'm inclined to think we'd get another raw deal if we tried. And my little heart couldn't go through that again!
There is a really large city not too far from here where we can get full bred dogs- we've seen poodles, huskies, labs, schnauzers, terriers, hounds, and those little Spanish dogs that bark a lot.
Here are some of my reasons from buying in the big city:
1. They are not what's called "back yard breeders", which produce offspring from unknown fathers; they are all pretty much pure bred.
2. If we know the breed, we have a safe guess at temperament.
3. These dogs receive better treatment than in our city... therefore giving us a fair shake at buying a dog who hasn't been abused or neglected
4. There is a vet in that city, so we will probably get a dog who's had all it's shots!

I found a fantastic web site that lists all the breeds of dogs, and also rates them 1-5. 1 being "excellent with children, strangers and other dogs" and 5 being "not recommended for children"
What struck me as odd was almost all the large breeds ranked between a 1 and 3! And many of the small breeds were not recommended for children. So I began to prepare my heart to get a medium sized dog instead of the convenient size Duke was.
I should also give Scott his due praise. He has done everything in his power to make this decision easier, and has been the most comfort to me.

So we've narrowed the breeds down to these three:
