We arrived in Hong Kong two days ago for a doctor's appointment. I've been having some...uh, colon... issues. It turns out I have a 'condition' that just causes a lot of discomfort and a little blood, but it's nothing to worry about. phew! (I was glad to hear it wasn't toilet snakes)(that's my irrational fear)
It turns out there isn't anything I can do to make it go away, but I can help it by cutting out spicy food and coffee. THAT ain't gonna happen. So it looks like this will be a life long ailment. haha
Getting here was quite a trip. Long story short, the plane that left "Boone" left five minutes early, and without us. We threw a fit in the airport and I even turned on the water works, but for some unknown reason (most likely some under-the-table-money) they closed the gates early. We ended up taking a private car to the 'big city' instead.
Catching our flight to Hong Kong was almost another fiasco. Had we been five minutes later, we would have missed that flight, too. In the 'big city' the traffic was horrible from construction, but to make it worse it was rush hour on top of a big wreck. Our taxi had been sitting on an off ramp for 20 minutes before we bounced and weaved our huge suitcases in and out of traffic. We were starting to panic because on foot would have taken an hour, but we couldn't sit in the traffic jam, either. We hurried in and our of the traffic and made it past the back-up. A really nice cab driver picked us up and rushed us to the airport, pro bono. So we caught our flight to Hong Kong by the skin of our teeth! We got in late at night, so we couldn't appreciate the huge size or the beauty of the city until the morning.
We decided to make the most of the days while here for the check-up, and we've never been more exhausted. We're not sure if we'll ever make it back to Hong Kong (expensive trip) so we crammed as much sight seeing into the short time as we could. Our two full days here we were out the door at 7 AM and not in bed until 12 PM. Aching feet, but very happy hearts!
Hong Kong is so unlike anything in our country... it's a lot like America but it's much bigger than any city I've ever been in. Getting around is quite easy, now that we can understand the MTR (subway)... plus, everyone speaks English. There are Starbucks on every corner, and 7 11's are 'omni-present'. Unlike in the country we live in now, Hong Kong is really clean and well kept. The traffic flows like a well oiled machine because they stay in the lines and obey traffic laws, and there is order to everything. There are trees every where and the streets are all landscaped.
We've been catching up on some great American cuisine. McDonald's, of course, Tuby Ruesday's, Subway, STARBUCKS, and some burger places. We're stuffed to the brim, but we have found that taxi rides are WAY too expensive so we end up walking off the lattes and hamburgers.
What surprised us the most is how friendly the people are. Five or six times, we've stopped to look at a map and right away a local person asks if we need help. There are a lot of foreigners who live here, and they are friendly too.
We're heading home tomorrow... when we get home, I'll post lots of pictures of our adventures then!
