On December 8th, my family celebrated our 16th year together as a family. 16 years ago my brother, John, and I were adopted and finally had our "forever family". My mom and dad are here in Thailand and we were able to celebrate in person with cake and a day at the movies!!

It's strange to even put a number of years on how long we've been together because it really feels like forever (in the good way); but on the other hand, it seems just like it was yesterday when I was walking up the steps of my new home in Raleigh asking "Do you have horses? Do you have cable?"
Being adopted is such a beautiful thing; I know my brother and I are one of the few blessed people who have gone through years of foster care and then the transition of adoption and come out the other side smiling. The pain of our life before adoption will never go away, but it pales in comparison to the joy that "comes in the morning".
I've never blogged about our adoption story, but it's a longer post for another time that deserves more time than I have now. For now, I just want to publicly celebrate 16 years with my "forever family."

Here were some well memorized lyrics of a cassette tape of songs all about adoption:
Mommy!
Tell me!
What does it mean to be adopted?
Mommy!
Tell me!
What does it mean to be adopted?
It means that you were born inside the tummy of another lady.
When you were born she couldn't take care of that little baby...

We listened to that tape in the car almost everywhere we went; it was one of the thousand steps my parents made to help us understand that we were together forever and always and for good or bad.
Happy Sweet 16th, Mom and Dad and John and Brigitte!
